How can I help my depressed teen?
If you believe your teen is suffering from depression, act immediately. Don’t hope and wish that the symptoms of depression will go away. You must take them to a doctor, even if you are unsure it’s depression.
Take time to talk to your teen, he will appreciate it in the long run. Offer support, be gentle with them, yet persistent, listen to your teen as if you weren’t his parent, and acknowledge the pain and sadness without it seeming irrational or silly to you. Make sure that you do not yell, scream or try to discipline them for anything they tell you. This will only make them not want to talk to you again in the future.
If your teen claims nothing wrong, but doesn’t explain it, trust your instincts. Denial is a strong emotion.
