Are there risks associated with teens taking anti-depression medicine?
Yes there are. Some physicians fear that antidepressants might cause the brain not to
develop normally. Antidepressants were designed and tested on adults only, so their impact on the youth, isn’t yet understood.
Researchers say that the human brain is developing quickly while we are still young, exposure to medicines such as antidepressants may affect or influence the wiring of the teens brain.
If your physician believes that he should be put on antidepressants, then you should seek a second opinion. The more you are informed of this the more you are aware of the cause and affect of things. Also remember that while there are risk and side effects to taking antidepressants sometimes the benefits will greatly out weight the risk. Discuss these things thoroughly with your child’s doctor before making any choices.
